Of late, Saab has been expanding his offering beyond the red carpet dresses he’s known for into ready-to-wear, accessories, sunglasses, and fragrance. Still, this isn’t where you take your teenager for a T-shirt—unless her idea of a T-shirt comes with poufs of organza for sleeves, a body embroidered with stars (the theme of Saab’s Spring collection was disco), and a four-figure price tag. As Saab put it, “In every item, even if it’s day, there is the touch of the house. You feel the presence of the hand in every piece.” Speaking of presence, Saab’s New York clients could be seeing more of the designer himself. As the head of the family-owned business with outposts in Dubai, Paris, London, and now New York, he leads a peripatetic lifestyle, but he promises to spend more time stateside with the new shop open. Before the end of 2017, he’d like to open an additional New York location that will house his bridal offering and a made-to-measure atelier.
