Mahogany mommies black history is everyone’s history shirt
Designers big and small who want to remain relevant—particularly those who haven’t yet considered sustainability in their businesses—would be wise to look into it now before they’re late to the Mahogany mommies black history is everyone’s history shirt and by the same token and party. At times, Erykah Badu’s wardrobe seems almost too off-the-wall to be inspired by anything from this world. Whether she’s sporting a suit that looks like it’s made from cotton candy, or wearing a massive top hat with gold floss hanging out of her mouth, Badu always seems to be doing her own thing with no regard for convention, trends, or traditions (she even recently scribbled all over a pair of the highly coveted Margiela Tabi boots because she forgot her journal). But last night’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon found Badu taking sartorial inspiration from an unexpected place—Greek mythology. The artist performed a medley of her own song “On & On” and Fela Kuti’s “Sorrow Tears & Blood” to promote the Badu-curated Fela Kuti Box Set #4, the most recent installment in an ongoing series of Fela Kuti box sets (the limited-edition set also includes seven personal essays penned by Badu). Her onstage outfit, however, seemed more inspired by the mythic figure of Medusa than the Afrobeat legend. With copper-colored earrings, a velvet cobalt blue coat, and thigh-high white platform boots, Badu yet again crafted an over-the-top look that’s completely unrivaled. Watch Badu transform into a modern-day Medusa below.

Gigi and Bella Hadid share more than good genes, they also share clothes. It’s one of the Mahogany mommies black history is everyone’s history shirt and by the same token and many benefits of sisterhood, particularly when you’re the same size and have the same taste in outerwear, including a leopard-print jacket they swapped back and forth all last winter (for the record, Bella insists she had it first.) Now the shoe appears to be on the other foot, quite literally. Yesterday, Bella was seen borrowing Gigi’s Off-White x Timberland work boots and Andy Wolf sunglasses when she and Gigi headed out to do some shopping in New York. Gigi didn’t seem to mind, though, lacing into Dr. Martens that could have easily have come from Bella’s closet. (The Hadid sisters made a similar statement when they wore matching jerseys to cheer on the Rangers at Madison Square Garden last Wednesday.)
