But Wildland is not alone in its embrace of Nordic design. With a new wave of Scandinavian-feeling hotels and restaurants emerging in Scotland, from Michelin-starred Timberyard’s pared-back simplicity to 57 Nord on the Isle of Skye, the only question is, why now? One could look all the way back to the history of Viking conquests in Scotland, or more recently to the upsurge of interest in Scandinavian design thanks to social media. But the answer might be simpler than it seems: location. “You must consider that Scotland and Scandinavia are on the same latitude, and there are so many similarities in nature and weather,” says Kramer. Ross echoes that sentiment: “A big reason why Scandinavian design is a thing and people care about their homes is that when you don’t want to be outside, you want your home to be as habitable as possible. Now people are embracing that in the UK, and in Scotland.”
The spirit of conservation in today’s Scottish design community takes many forms. “We want to create something that somebody will have a real emotional connection with, that they’ll cherish, and look after—something that would have been thrown away 10 times if it had just been bought off the shelf,” says Groves-Raines. “It’s both a sustainability and environmental thing. But it’s also cultural, which is essential to protect and nourish.” And in terms of environmental conservation, it would be remiss not to mention that Wildland has a 200-year vision to restore the Highlands to its natural splendor, making it Scotland’s largest private conservation effort.
And the buildings’ exteriors are just as important as the interiors, if not more so. The properties are restored to an impeccable standard, using the original techniques and materials they were created with. “On the conservation side, [Wildland] is very focused on doing things right,” says Groves-Raines, whose architecture firm specializes in restoring historical period buildings. “You have to be working with very skilled, traditional craftsmen with skills that are dying out. Stonemasons, people working in slate, lead work, woodwork, lath, and plaster—all of these trades that are finding it harder and harder to survive.”
